The Gloom in question is a subspecies of homo sapiens. At least, that is what's assumed though there has been a lot of debate on the subject and it is more widely believed that she is from another planet. As to which one, that is also up for discussion.
She is not often found because she spends most of her time hiding in bookstores, behind books, and sometimes inside the books themselves when she is feeling particularly unsociable (which is often). When she is spotted she is usually doing something very odd like talking to dolls or animals when there is a perfectly good human being nearby, not drinking alcohol, or creating new ways to accessorize silverware (or all those things all at once).
Miss Misery Gloom has many strange habits and collects a strange assortment of things like spoons, horse hair, leaves, anatomy texts, stripey stockings, tea sets, and dolls.
Often she is described as "always having her nose in a book" and when asked to comment on this replied that it "was absolutely not true because how would I eat and besides, my nose is so large there is no book big enough for it to fit in."
Her main goal in life is to become a ballerina-unicorn trainer (though it is unclear who does the dancing; her or the unicorns) but for the time being spends most of her free time doing this, this, and this.
